In March, 2002, ESF convened a meeting of web designers, programmers
and experienced Esperanto teachers in Davis, California, in
conjunction with the annual conference of the Computer-Assisted
Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO). Drawing on ideas
and demonstrations at the conference and on work already accomplished
under the aegis of ESF, the group drew up a plan for a multilingual,
interactive, website for learning Esperanto.
Today, Lernu.net is much more than an idea. It is a living,
breathing multimedia vehicle through which interested individuals
around the world can learn Esperanto for free and at
their own leisure. Lernu is unique interlingual technology
for many reasons, not the least of which includes the fact
that the site can be translated into more than a dozen (and
counting) world languages and provides users with multiple
access points to online tutors and a rich, global Esperanto
culture.
Visit the Lernu community at www.lernu.net.
Additional information about Lernu is also available in the
Spring 2003 issue of
Esperantic
Studies (14).

Initiated by ESF in 2001, Edukado.net was developed as an instructional
resource for Esperanto teachers and learners around the world.
Today, the instructional resources at Edukado.net
have been expanded by an international team of programmers
and educators
to include an interactive catalogue of over 130
published materials for teaching Esperanto, a database of
downloadable materials contributed by participating teachers,
a noticeboard
and a discussion forum. Over 10,000 visits were recorded over
the course of its first year. The site continues to be updated
and expanded by Ms. Katalin Kovats, a Hungarian expert in language
teaching and teacher training.

Interkulturo is an educational and research initiative that
is managed by the International League of Esperanto-Speaking
Teachers Network. The project has involved the creation of
an international network of elementary school classrooms that
use Esperanto as a bridge language through which teachers and
students can exchange information, ideas, and
instructional materials in a variety of subject areas (e.g.,
social studies, language arts, sciences). ESF's support of
the Interkulturo project will enable the creation of a new
interactive website (in effect, a "virtual school") that
will better link all participants; in addition, ESF support
will provide a means for the addition of new classes, the continuing
development of support materials and improved project administration.

This project entailed the production of a comprehensive 15-lesson
video
course
in Esperanto. Entitled Esperanto, Pasporto al la Tuta Mondo,
the course involves an international team of actors, an original
script, a professional
documentary film director, and consultation with several outstanding
Esperanto teachers. An ESF educational grant enabled the completion
and marketing of the first 12 episodes, together with a comprehensive
set of workbooks. ESF Board member Grant Goodall has also developed
a workshop for teachers interested in using the series, and
a guidebook and training video are in production. Pasporto
is currently available on VHS in North American and European
formats. The
series is expected to appear on DVD in 2003.

ACTFL Esperanto Guidelines
ESF has been actively involved in the development of proficiency
guidelines for Esperanto as part of ACTFL’s national foreign
language proficiency guidelines project. The guidelines are now
being translated into Esperanto and will be the subject of a
scholarly article by Timothy Reagan and Bonnie Fonseca-Greber.

Independent Study Esperanto Course
Under Grant Goodall’s leadership, a university-level
Esperanto course has been developed and approved at the University
of California,
San Diego. The course, which has received modest funding from
ESF, was designed so that it could also be used at other higher
education institutions.

Interlinguistics Certificate Program - Adam
Mickiewicz University
ESF provides scholarships for a
number of students in the Interlinguistic Studies certificate
program at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland. The program,
located in the Department of Linguistics and directed by professor
Ilona Koutny, covers a wide range of topics in Interlinguistics
and requires students to carry out original graduate-level
research. Recent awardees have come from Russia, Germany,
Lithuania, France and Iran.

Springboard to Languages Project
The Springboard to Languages Project is an effort to introduce
Esperanto in selected primary schools in the UK as part of
the country’s new language policy. An important component
of the project is the evaluation of students’ language
learning, with an emphasis on the propedeutic effects of Esperanto
language study preceding French language study. ESF has provided
$10,000 for the current year (2006-2007) of this four-year
project, and has received a request for funding for the next
school year.

ELTE
(Eötvös Loránd
University) Esperanto Project
ESF has funded, on a one-year basis, a faculty position at ELTE,
the leading university in Hungary, which has had a formal Esperanto
program for many years. There are a number of unresolved challenges
and issues related to ELTE and the teaching, studying and researching
of Esperanto both at ELTE and in Hungary in general. ESF may
be able to play an active role in encouraging the teaching and
learning of Esperanto at the university level in Europe.

GIL
(Gesellschaft für Interlinguistik) Program (Leipzig)
Early in 2007, the ESF Board approved 9000 euros to support a
teaching effort at the University of Leipzig aimed at the ultimate
establishment of a program in interlinguistics and Esperanto
studies, under the direction of Dr. Sabine Fiedler and the
sponsorship of GIL.

Esperanto Teacher Training Program in Africa
ESF has provided some limited funding to support an Esperanto
teacher training program in Africa. At the end of the funding
term, the program administrators will produce a final report
and evaluation which may be submitted for publication.

Esperanto Documentary Film Project
ESF has agreed to provide limited funding to support a documentary
film project on Esperanto produced by Sam Green, whose earlier
documentary on the Weather Underground was nominated for an
Academy Award. Mr. Green and his team visited the 2006 World
Congress in Florence and will be in Yokohama for the 2007 Congress.
This project is an excellent example of how public discourse
with respect to Esperanto and interlingual communication can
be encouraged and improved.
