Ian Richmond reports on a symposium on the computer-assisted instruction of Esperanto, held this past April concurrently with the CALICO conference in Davis, California.

 

ESF Annual Report 2001

The Report gives an overview of administrative changes in the ESF and various projects supported by the ESF in 2001. These include the Summer Esperanto Program, the Pasporto Esperanto Video Course, new initiatives in developing educational materials, the Berkeley Student Program, and various projects furthering interlinguistic research.

 

Educational Opportunities

News of three educational programs in interlinguistics. Wim Jansen has been appointed to the chair in interlinguistics at the University of Amsterdam (NL), the North American Summer Esperanto Institute has a new venue, and the interlinguistics program at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (PL), is now accepting new students.

 

Conferences

Upcoming conferences including papers on interlinguistics include the 2002 Esperanto Studies Symposium at the World Esperanto Congress in Fortaleza (BR) and the 17th International Congress of Linguistics in Prague (CZ).

What’s New in LPLP?

Issue 1/2002 of the journal Language Planning and Language Problems includes articles on US literacy in languages and international affairs (Müller), the costs of linguistic communication in international bodies (Piron), the sociolinguistic situation of Catalan in the Balearic Islands (Pieras-Guasp), and Vilborg’s etymological dictionary of Esperanto (Minnaja).
